Bottom-weighted to prevent it falling out of the pot, the spurtle’s small surface area mixes the food without dragging it. The result is a smoother, creamier meal.
The traditional spurtle has a Scottish thistle carved into the top. Our spurtles have a barrel carved instead. These spurtles are turned by hand from a Bushmills whiskey barrel.

Taken from a Bushmills whiskey barrel these spurtles vary quite a lot in patina and thickness ... due to the character and shape of the wood before turning. The finish is not as smooth as the cherry spurtles and there may be minor splits or chips in the finished piece. Approximately 32cm long, the thinner spurtles are between 1.5 - 2cm at the widest point and the thicker spurtles are between 2 - 2.5cm at the widest point.
Cleaning and caring ...
Wipe clean and dry. Do not allow to soak and do not put in a dishwasher. If the grain swells and rises after use you can leave as is or sand down with a fine grit sandpaper. Oiling is not essential, but will enhance the colour of the wood ... any food-friendly oil can be used and mineral oil is recommended.
